Clinical supervision is something that is extremely important aspect of psychotherapy and counselling. It facilitates therapeutic competence and enhances professional development by promoting good practice. It helps the counsellor to reflect on their own thoughts and feelings, ensuring client welfare and serving a gatekeeping function in provision of clinical services.
It is a support for clinical challenge. As an Asian woman of colour and from a collectivist culture I am sensitive and committed to issues related to diverse identities and power differential in the supervisory relationship. Throughout my journey in the mental health, I have met with supervisors with concrete structure for supervision at times which came at the expense of my cultural self. It also taught me about my blind spots and skills in balancing exploration.
